When a girl is having a birthday, two big questions arise.  1) Is there such a thing as too many ruffles?  2) Is there such a thing as too much pink?  Of course, the answer in our case was “Are you kidding me?!?  NEVER!” And so began the Pretty in Pink birthday celebration for Berlin’s big day.  I’m a girly-girl at heart, I love pink and I also figured there are only going to be so many years where I can pick the theme for my kid’s party, so when my girl looks this good in pink, I just couldn’t say no.

I started with the paper doll invitations from Martha Stewart and then continued to use them throughout in the decorations.  Not surprisingly I had tons of pink patterned paper to use for their dresses and then we also used that to coordinate the lollies and pom-poms that we hung from the ceiling.

I desperately wished  my Silhouette Cameo had come in time to do all the work of cutting them out, but this time around I had to do it the old fashioned way.  I thought I’d never be done cutting out round heads, so of course I recruited my mom to help.  She’s amazing!  The trick to printing the party info on the dresses was that I printed the outline of the three girls on an 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet of cardstock, then glued the dresses on, then ran them through the printer again before cutting the girls out.  It worked like a charm.

Of course the menu consisted of pink food:

    • Red Grapes atop Pecan Rolled Goat Cheese
    • White Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
    • Pink Candied Pretzel Sticks
    • Strawberry Cake Pops
    • Peanut Butter & Raspberry Jelly Sandwiches
    • Cranberry & Turkey Tea Sandwiches
    • Pink Circus Animal Crackers
    • Pink Lemonade
    • and Pink Sugar Cookie Lollipops with a bag of Pink Jelly Beans for favors

The cake was a three layer lemon cake covered in ruffles of pink frosting, also from Martha.

One of the things I’d seen on Pinterest and fallen in love with was a pettiskirt for little girls.  I knew I wasn’t going to plop down the $75 to buy one, so I decided to make one (in pink, of course) for Berlin to wear at the party.  It was so much fun and I loved how it turned out.  I even learned a few good lessons (unfortunately, some of them after the fact…yes, there is a difference between chiffon and nylon chiffon) but it was frilly and pink and she looked gorgeous in it, especially with the cowboy boots from Marmie & Grandpa Dan!

The rocking chair she’s sitting in is well over 100 years old and was given to me by my grandma when I was a little girl.  It was so fun to be able to pass this down to her.  Every girl should have a place to rock her babies.

Luckily, my mom, Marmie, came out the week before the party and helped with all the baking, decorating, and pink-ifying that took place.  I literally could not have done the party without her.  Although, if I work her that hard every time she comes, she may start opting out of a trip to see the grand kids, so I might need to tone it down the next time.

Berlin loves her daddy, no doubt about it.  She is starting to pick up a few words, she says Mom, Uh-Oh and “mmmm” means everything from the sound a cow makes to “more” to “tastes good” to “I want that”.  But the thing she says clearly every night when Kyle walks in the door is “Dad’s home!”

Big brother Kade loves his sister and was more than happy to “teach her how to do it” for all the new toys.

    I love this girl!

How did one year fly by so quickly?!  How is she old enough to give kisses and make faces and play games?  How can this tiny of a person have so big a personality?  How are we so blessed to have her as our daughter?  Thank you God, for this beautiful precious gift!

“Pizza is my FAVORITE!” has been one of Kade’s favorite lines this past year, so what better way to celebrate turning THREE than with a Pizza Party!

This year we decided to spend the day, just the four of us, at the Bay Area Discovery Museum.  Everything there is geared toward kids 6 years old and younger – the perfect spot for Kade to explore.  I think one of my favorite parts of the day, proving that I have a three year old BOY, is when the little plastic fish the museum provides for swimming in the gentle creek turned into ferocious attack animals that were growling at each other (see the vicious encounter below).

On the way home, we picked up a Take’N'Bake pizza and box for our pizza cake.  Kade was so excited to get to eat pizza twice in one night!  We used shaved white chocolate for the “cheese”, 100 Grand candy bars for the “sausage”, fruit roll-ups for the “pepperoni” and licorice for the “olives”.  It really turned out cute.  This was definitely one of the easier cakes I’ve decorated and since Kade loved it so much, I think we may have to whip it up again for other special occasions.

We celebrated his birthday the weekend before the actual day, but we didn’t open up gifts until Sunday night.  I think Kyle was afraid he might not get to play with Kade (or the new presents) much before going back to work so he convinced me to let Kade open one on Saturday afternoon – the Backhoe.  Those two boys were so excited…now I don’t even know how we ever played in a sandbox without a Backhoe.

The day was AMAZING and over too quickly.  I can’t believe my baby is THREE!  Three whole years!  I’m so lucky to be able to spend my days with this little character.  His expansive vocabulary and facial expressions just crack me up, and I love that he is so full of life and curiosity.  He loves order and has a persistent (very persistent) spirit.  His heart is tender and compassionate, his sense of humor is adorable and I must admit I love his touch of sarcasm.  And just look at those dimples!  How could I be so blessed?!

The gift-giving session this Christmas was probably the longest we’ve ever had.  It started mid-December with a few gifts from us to Kade & Berlin that we didn’t want to have to pack to and from Colorado.  Then continued with a few more boxes shipped to CA from grandparents.  Once in Colorado, we opened gifts at three different sets of grandparents on three different days.  We even forgot about the Christmas stockings at one house and opened them 4 or 5 days AFTER Christmas.  Kade thought every time we went some place new we should open more presents.  He certainly loved every moment of it!

This got me thinking, we have SO much to be thankful for.  Of course the gifts are fun and exciting, but to have so many people that love us and our kids is truly an amazing blessing.  We were surrounded with so much warmth and joy and support this last month.  I hope I can teach Kade and Berlin to anticipate that part of Christmas as much as the delight of opening gifts.

I can’t believe it’s December already!  I thought life went fast with one kid, it seems even faster with two.  The kids and I (it still seems a little weird to say that) are getting into a bit of a routine here at home now that Kyle has gone back to work.  We managed to decorate a bit for Christmas on Thanksgiving weekend which immediately put me in the mood for this time of year.  I just LOVE Christmas time!

But today is not what I picture when I think Christmas.  Growing up in Colorado, we were almost guaranteed a white Christmas.  I remember lots of sledding days, snow forts and cups of hot chocolate.  But here in NorCal, it’s just cold and gray and drizzly.  So rather than try to sled in the puddles with Kade, we decided to open up the Costume Box.  We weren’t really trying to create outfits, more just trying to use everything in the box.  He sometimes gets stuck in a rut with particular toys and only wants to play with one or two…forever.  So I was trying to get him to have fun with as much as possible in hopes that he would find some new favorites.

Without a doubt, the boy is a ham.  When we put on the first outfit, I told him to go have a look in the mirror.  He did…cracked himself up…then HE decided it was time for a picture and went and stood in front of the Christmas tree!

This catching pose was his idea.  I barely got the camera up in time to capture it!

I don’t know why, but with the rope and tiger hat this one sort of reminds me of Siegfried and Roy or maybe with the popped collar and gloves, it’s Michael Jackson???

The boy is sheer entertainment (at least whenever he’s not fighting me over food!).
