June 1st?!  Are you serious?  What have our days been filled with that I couldn’t get around to making a couple posts?  Well, I’ll tell you.  First there was Mother’s Day…which was wonderful! It included naps, shopping, and dad babysitting.  What more could you ask for?

Then, of course, there’s the sandbox…

And at least one of us is developing amazing stomach muscles while doing sit-ups and crunches in the bouncy seat…

I discovered that my daughter (who has feet too small to even wear shoes) has more shoes than I do, thanks to generous friends with girls!

Now that I’m finished with breastfeeding, I’ve started a diet which means a lot more trips to the grocery store for fresh fruits and veggies.  Luckily Costco builds carts for TWO!  (He was only slightly attacking her with tickles…I’ve never seen a girl more patient with being pestered.)

Sometimes Kyle and I act more like  a 62 year old couple than a 32 year old couple.  One weekend we even went to an RV Show, just to take a look around and see if there was anything we couldn’t live without.  And we’ve also been on more than a few fishing trips this month, but thankfully never had to leave the living room.

We had to laugh at how this fishing game perfectly exemplified how differently Kyle and I work.  Kade wanted a “new” game one afternoon so I told him we’d go fishing.  He was thrilled at the idea and of course, had no patience and wanted to play right then and there.  So I grabbed some construction paper and gave some to Kyle and we both went to work cutting out fish.  My fish were completely boring: I had about 7 fat fish and 7 skinny fish.  The end.  But they were ready to be played with in less than 5 minutes.  Kyle disappeared into the office for over half an hour, leaving me to wonder if he had forgotten about the whole thing altogether.  But then he emerged with perfectly detailed sharks, seahorses, whales, swordfish and lobsters (or “mobsters” as Kade calls them).  I always give him a bad time about having a disease that forces him “slightly upgrade” everything…but in the end it always benefits everyone.  So even though it sometimes takes AGES to complete, I really can’t complain.

Kade’s been reading a few books about being a big brother and loves helping with Berlin even more now.  She was so excited that he was there that not much eating took place.  We’ll keep practicing since I love the help!

Our flowers and plants in the backyard are doing great.  Kade is still waiting for the zucchini bread to start growing, but luckily the plants have managed to survive the snails, our arch enemy.

I grew up in Colorado, which is usually very very dry.  So I’m pretty sure I was about 25 before I’d ever even seen a snail in real life before.  Not so for Kade, he discovered these guys on a plant in the backyard.

Unfortunately, that’s not all he discovered.  He also came across a giant rusty stake which works brilliantly as a hobo pole or as a weapon to ward off attacks from various imaginary assailants.

Berlin is becoming more and more tolerant of playing on her stomach but is still not a huge fan.

Sometimes it just all becomes too much and she can’t hold that head up for even one more second…some days I know exactly how she feels. :)

We’ve also taken a few trips to the park.  Kade is SO outgoing and friendly, it’s really cute to watch.  He’ll tell just about anyone (kids in the park, people walking by on the sidewalk, checkout clerks at the grocery store), “Hi, I’m Kade.  K-A-D-E.  That spells Kade.  You want to be my friend?”  This little boy came to the park with two trucks and after Kade befriended him, was generous enough to share and the two of them drove (with motors revved!) all over the park, mostly up and down the slides…No, that’s not dangerous!

Berlin, is a little more quiet, at least for the time being.  And is content to chill in the stroller while Kade runs around like a madman.

I’m not sure if any of you have read  Sandra Boynton’s book Blue Hat, Green Hat but in it is a turkey that always gets dressed the wrong way.  It’s one of Kade’s favorites and sometimes the only way to really experience a book is to act it out.

This little girl is made of solid muscle!  A lot of times holding a baby can feel like holding a soft pillow, not with this one.  She LOVES standing, jumping, dancing with those almost chubby legs and every time she does she flexes her arms and torso.  I can claim a few of her traits came from me: eyes – check, dark hair – check, metabolism and muscle tone…definitely not!

I love how mischievous he looks in this picture, when in reality he was being an angel and wrote out the entire alphabet.  Not bad for a two year old, eh?  At Christmas time, I got him this dry erase activity book for the plane, and he thoroughly enjoys tracing the letters and numbers in it, but just in the last few weeks he’s started to write out the alphabet with no reference point whatsoever.  Since I’ve never actually “taught” him though, he draws each of them from bottom to top and right to left.

We also just closed on the refi of our condo down in LA.  Kyle and I were lucky enough to buy it at the very pinnacle of the housing market and although we still value it, it’s value has dropped considerably.  So it was time to try to lower that monthly payment as much as possible.  I can’t tell you how glad I am that that process is over – so much paperwork, so many phone calls, so much time – but, it’s done.  Crossed off the list!  Hallelujah!!

So that’s what we’ve been up to lately.  I’ve been putting together some homeschool projects for Kade and purchased a few more decorating projects from the thrift store, but those will get their own updates later on.  Meanwhile, I hope you get to end this day with a snuggle from someone you love.

I’ve decided that Spring is here, whether or not it’s actually true.  I have a bit of cabin fever and am really looking forward to many, many days in the backyard this summer.  Kyle and I went to OSH a few days back and decided to get some fresh plants for the backyard pots (we do this every year…not because I only buy annuals, but because I have a bad habit of neglecting my yard in the winter and killing everything off).  This year I wanted to go with purple and white and love the burst of color back there now.  We also started some vegetable seedlings inside that I’ll need to transplant soon, and I will try to remember to grab a few more pics of the flowers when I do.  It’s great to go out and water each day, and I love having a helper.  Kade waters the rose bushes and trees along the fence and I water the pots up by the house in an attempt to minimize overspray onto the patio furniture.  :)   I realized the other day, he’s been infatuated with that water hose for quite some time…

Since I’ve been baking 2 loaves of zucchini bread every other week for what seems like eternity, I thought I should give you a little update on our garden adventure this summer.  I’ll be honest…pregnancy definitely had an affect on the amount of energy I poured into this year’s efforts.  However, I have enjoyed this summer’s harvest, maybe even more so than last year.

Last year we threw everything into the ground, including things neither of us like to eat.  I’m not exactly sure why, except that a packet of seeds only costs 69 cents and we were curious what we could make grow.  But this year we said “NO” to radishes and onions and nature said “NO” to our attempt at corn, yellow squash, and carrots.

However, the things I cared about most (zucchini, tomatoes, and pumpkins) did great!  And our salad section produced so much lettuce, arugula and spinach that we couldn’t eat it fast enough.  (Although I had impressive intentions of eating salads every day this summer, the pregnancy cravings won over and I opted for a lot more crackers and cheese and the greens eventually went to seed.)

But I still wanted to show how everything progressed over the last few months, so here’s a few before and after photos.

This was the salad section.  The lettuce on the far left and arugula on the right eventually grew to about 4′ tall!  The spinach was great while it lasted, but it didn’t do to well in the heat.

This little corner is still going gang-busters!  The amount of zucchini grown is absolutely staggering.  In fact, we eat zucchini bread so often for breakfast that the other morning I gave Kade a slice and he said, “Zucchini bread, of course!”  We’ve got 3 tomato plants in the back along the fence that are almost hidden by the zucchini leaves, which we have to cut back often.  But they are loaded with fruit and just in the last couple weeks have started to ripen beautifully.

Out of everything, I think the veggies we planted along side the house had the hardest time.  Even so, I’ve got 4 or 5 good looking pumpkins that I’ll roast and puree and about 5 butternut squash that will be delicious with a little butter and brown sugar!  Our watermelon plant did better than last year, it actually made 2 watermelons.  But the birds got to one before we could and the other was a bit sketchy looking and we were afraid to eat it.  I’m going to try to convince Kyle next year that we should give up on becoming watermelon farmers.

Overall, I think bragging rights should probably go to Kade.  He’s really the one that LOVED watering and if not for him dragging me out of the house to play with the hose, these poor plants may never have gotten a drink.  If you could only see my dried up herbs and burned snap-dragons, you would know that it is a miracle we got as big of a harvest as we did.  Let me know if you want to come over for a warm slice of zucchini bread…I’ve got plenty.

OK, so I feel like I owe you an explanation.  We have not died or fallen off the planet.  Things just seem to keep coming up.  (These are not excuses, possibly blog topics as soon as I get around to it, but not excuses.) :)

After Kade’s birthday party, we went to CO for a great time with grandparents.  Then after we got home, we had friends visit from Atlanta.  I came up with the crazy notion that reupholstering our living room couch would be a good idea, which of course led to rearranging the entire living room. The girls threw me a “baby sprinkle” and we all went to the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco.  Brice, Kyle’s brother, came to visit for a few days.   Kyle has been working all along on the activity table for Kade and it’s now all together (I can’t wait to show it!!!  I absolutely LOVE it!) But we still need to stain it and paint the inside which means I’ve been researching ideas on how to do that.  We also came up with an idea to use the table for a few felt board games – so I have been cutting out felt pieces for what seems like weeks.  The garden is doing great – mainly the zucchini.  I haven’t been keeping track, but I think I’ve made somewhere around 14 loaves of zucchini bread and our freezer is stocked with zucchini!  My sister, Megan, sent me the most ADORABLE doll patterns for my birthday, so I’ve also been trying to sew a couple dolls in my spare time.  A girl doll for Fritz, of course, and a little boy doll for Kade so that when Fritz comes and mom seems to always be taking care of Baby Sister, Kade will have a baby to take care of too.  (He really likes doing what I’m doing).

Meanwhile, Kade has apparently learned the entire English language.  He has gone from saying about 50-60 words to talking about everything he sees, everything he remembers, and what he wants to do that day.  It’s super cute to here these complex sentences come out of a tiny little mouth!  He’s also decided that “Duck T-T” (DuckTales) is a great past time, along with Buzz Woody (Toy Story).  He asks for them every day by saying “Duck T-T, OK!”, as if I’ve offered and he’s agreeing.  He’s also learning his ABCs, but instead calls them “BBCEs).  Potty training is going GREAT and I have high hopes that we are on track to be in really good shape when Fritz comes.  When you ask Kade where his baby sister is, he points at my tummy – SO precious!  Kyle and I are trying to figure out what to do about Kade’s new bed as he’ll obviously need to get a bigger one so Fritz can have the crib.  We’d like a white Captain’s style single bed, but we’re trying to decide if we buy a new one, make our own, or buy some crap-tastic one off Craigslist and modify it to be exactly what we want.

As far as little Fritz, the pregnancy is going great.  She is really kicking up a storm now and is old enough to get the hiccups.  (I know she’s got them when I feel really rhythmic soft “kicks”).  I’m still feeling pretty good, although for a while there I was SUPER exhausted.  The doctor said that I was apparently very low on iron and so now that I’m taking an iron supplement, I’m feeling much better and have more energy.  We think we have a first name picked out, but still working on the middle name.  We’re keeping both a secret as we’ve got to have something be a surprise or no one will bother to take our phone call when she’s born.  :)   We’re in the final leg though, officially the 3rd trimester.  A week or so ago, one of Kyle’s coworkers who has 2 little girls, was getting rid of her baby girl clothes and gave us A TON!  That really got me in the mood for baby girl – all those ruffles and pink and lace!  I can hardly wait!

I’m sorry I haven’t been updating this as regularly.  I promise to do better…scratch that, I promise to TRY to do better.  It seems that I can’t really predict my capabilities as well as I used to before pregnancy.  :)   Thanks for understanding!
