When a girl is having a birthday, two big questions arise.  1) Is there such a thing as too many ruffles?  2) Is there such a thing as too much pink?  Of course, the answer in our case was “Are you kidding me?!?  NEVER!” And so began the Pretty in Pink birthday celebration for Berlin’s big day.  I’m a girly-girl at heart, I love pink and I also figured there are only going to be so many years where I can pick the theme for my kid’s party, so when my girl looks this good in pink, I just couldn’t say no.

I started with the paper doll invitations from Martha Stewart and then continued to use them throughout in the decorations.  Not surprisingly I had tons of pink patterned paper to use for their dresses and then we also used that to coordinate the lollies and pom-poms that we hung from the ceiling.

I desperately wished  my Silhouette Cameo had come in time to do all the work of cutting them out, but this time around I had to do it the old fashioned way.  I thought I’d never be done cutting out round heads, so of course I recruited my mom to help.  She’s amazing!  The trick to printing the party info on the dresses was that I printed the outline of the three girls on an 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheet of cardstock, then glued the dresses on, then ran them through the printer again before cutting the girls out.  It worked like a charm.

Of course the menu consisted of pink food:

    • Red Grapes atop Pecan Rolled Goat Cheese
    • White Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
    • Pink Candied Pretzel Sticks
    • Strawberry Cake Pops
    • Peanut Butter & Raspberry Jelly Sandwiches
    • Cranberry & Turkey Tea Sandwiches
    • Pink Circus Animal Crackers
    • Pink Lemonade
    • and Pink Sugar Cookie Lollipops with a bag of Pink Jelly Beans for favors

The cake was a three layer lemon cake covered in ruffles of pink frosting, also from Martha.

One of the things I’d seen on Pinterest and fallen in love with was a pettiskirt for little girls.  I knew I wasn’t going to plop down the $75 to buy one, so I decided to make one (in pink, of course) for Berlin to wear at the party.  It was so much fun and I loved how it turned out.  I even learned a few good lessons (unfortunately, some of them after the fact…yes, there is a difference between chiffon and nylon chiffon) but it was frilly and pink and she looked gorgeous in it, especially with the cowboy boots from Marmie & Grandpa Dan!

The rocking chair she’s sitting in is well over 100 years old and was given to me by my grandma when I was a little girl.  It was so fun to be able to pass this down to her.  Every girl should have a place to rock her babies.

Luckily, my mom, Marmie, came out the week before the party and helped with all the baking, decorating, and pink-ifying that took place.  I literally could not have done the party without her.  Although, if I work her that hard every time she comes, she may start opting out of a trip to see the grand kids, so I might need to tone it down the next time.

Berlin loves her daddy, no doubt about it.  She is starting to pick up a few words, she says Mom, Uh-Oh and “mmmm” means everything from the sound a cow makes to “more” to “tastes good” to “I want that”.  But the thing she says clearly every night when Kyle walks in the door is “Dad’s home!”

Big brother Kade loves his sister and was more than happy to “teach her how to do it” for all the new toys.

    I love this girl!

How did one year fly by so quickly?!  How is she old enough to give kisses and make faces and play games?  How can this tiny of a person have so big a personality?  How are we so blessed to have her as our daughter?  Thank you God, for this beautiful precious gift!

This is the face of SPUNK!  The little mischievous glimmer in her eye, the smile that’s sweet enough to make you suspicious.  A firecracker if there ever was one!

The big news this month is pulling herself up to standing and cruising.  It’s like one day she realized that she could be eye-level with knees and never looked back.  The routine is that she will scoot to something, pull herself up, throw everything within her reach to the floor, and then holler until someone sets her back down on the ground, only to immediately pull herself back up again.  I think I will be more excited than she is when she finally figures out how to sit down from standing.  She’s also been doing her best to figure out how to stand up in the middle of the floor.  She gets up on her hands and feet and balances precariously for a few moments and then either gravity or mom swoops in – one is easier on the forehead than the other.  She also loves pushing things around since it enables her to walk around, this green table and the toy box or current favorites.

What is with my 11 month old looking like she is already 4 in this picture?!?

Each day makes me more and more curious about her personality.  She seems to be a bit extreme in her emotions, the highs are amazing; the laughs are always giggles; the cuddles, super tender; the frustrations, dramatic; and teething…unbearable!  I can’t say that I blame her.  On her 10 month b-day she got her bottom 2 teeth and now the top 4 are coming in all at once.  Six teeth in a month would be hard on anyone.

The tongue is still a prominent feature.  :)

Here you can pretend that she is blowing you a goodbye kiss and not just asking for a “cracker”.  :)

My sweet Berlin, this year is going by too quickly.  I thank God for your spirit, your laugh and your precious cuddles that just make problems and stress melt into the background.  I feel so privileged that He placed you in our care, you mean more to us than you will ever know.  Dad and I love you so very, very much – my heart is full!

Here is the epitome of sweetness…but don’t let those darling eye lashes fool you!  She can be a wild one!

My baby is 9 months now and so lively.  She continues to jabber non-stop and even calls Kyle “Dada”.  I have apparently been left out in the cold when it comes to names, however.  I think she’s learned that pretty much any sound will get my attention so why bother narrowing it down to something specific.

She is still Kade’s biggest fan and laughs at pretty much anything he does , as this picture attests too.  And she loves playing games and imitating you.  She’ll shake her head, clap her hands, wave, blow raspberries and more.  The best part is that she is so darn proud of herself when she does it – she gets this HUGE grin and cocks her head to the side and shrugs her shoulders like “did you just see how cute I was?”

The big milestones this month were mastering finger foods and straw cups.  She literally attacks that straw cup and I’m pretty sure would try to defend it with her life.  If she’s got her hands on it and I try reaching for it, those eyebrows get so furrowed and frowny.  “Don’t take MY water!”

Berlin, we love those eyes and that precious smile.  You bring us such JOY!

Hurry!  Get this posted before she’s 9 months!!  Here’s the darling babe at 8 months old.  Isn’t she a crack up?!  This is not an unusual face: tongue out, big cheesy flat grin and eyes closed.  It’s her “life is just too exciting and fun I can barely stand it” face.  It happens a lot when Kade is anywhere around.

OK – I realize I was pushing it just a little with the barrette in her hair…but it is getting longer and thicker.  I just love her wide smile!  We are able to see so much more of her personality day by day.  She loves games…peek-a-boo especially.  When she hears music she starts dancing.  She’s figured out clapping and is so darn proud of herself every time she does it.  She has no problem using her voice and Kade thinks she should get in trouble for screaming in the house, since he does.  But for the moment, it’s just fun to hear her get excited.

Once she decides to do something, that’s it.  For instance, she’s been waking up in the early morning for a bottle for the longest time, then falls back to sleep for a few more hours.  I wasn’t really trying to change that habit, just going with her flow.  Then all of a sudden, we came back from Colorado and she has slept solid from 9:30 to 8:30 every night.  She just decided.  Same with trying to feed her solids, she would take her time and swish it around and feeding her a half cup of cereal took ages.  Then she just decided she liked eating and now it’s like she’s Speedy Gonzales.  And with sitting up…she went from needing constantly propped up and balanced to full on taking charge of her little body in less than 48 hours.  She’s teaching me that it’s more about when she’s ready than anything else.  What a doll!

Her tongue is literally out of her mouth 80% of the time, so I couldn’t help but make a little comparison…
