I wanted to do something “from Kade” for the Great-Grandparents Christmas gifts this year and eventually came up with the idea of making a set of felt coasters with his little handprint. For simplicity, I chose the same wool felt color combination for each of the four sets, but varied it slightly so each set would be unique. I had never worked with felt before, but ended up loving it.
First, I traced Kade’s hand on paper and then cut out 16 little handprints. Then for ease, I attached each hand to one 4×4 square with Wonder-Under. To make each coaster a little more secure and give a more finished look, I did a blanket stitch around the hands. I wanted to cover my not so pretty underside, as well as make the coaster a bit more substantial, so I Wonder-Under-ed another 4×4 square in a corresponding color to the back of each one and used my new rotary cutter (Thanks Mom!) to trim the edges. Finally, I edged each coaster with more blanket stitching.
I really liked the finished product…my only regret was that I should have made one more set to keep. Then again, the blanket stitching did get pretty old about coaster #5.
